Ideal roles and great careers in Australia’s Defence Industry

Trade, technical or professional. Find your ideal role and grow your career in Australia’s Defence Industry.

Australians are proud of their Defence Force and its many achievements over the past 100 years. The Australian Defence Force, encompassing the Navy, Army and Air Force, have earned a fitting reputation for resilience, resourcefulness and compassion. In recent years, Defence Force personnel have made an essential contribution to stability around the globe, as well as helping Australia’s community, friends and neighbours, participating in emergency rescues and responding to natural disasters. With the Defence Force playing a hugely important role in our society, there are a great many opportunities for great careers in Defence.

One in a 100,000

Meet Michael Tan, a recruitment consultant with Programmed Professionals. In his work recruiting white collar business support professionals, Tan is particularly interested in strengthening internal relationships and streamlining the recruitment cycle. However, recruitment wasn’t his first calling.

In 2007, Tan joined the Australian Army as a Gunner in the Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery. Over several years he was proud to put his training into practice and deploy to the Middle East on active duty.

Today, more than 100,000 young Australians are employed by the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and the Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO), where  15 per cent of the full-time force are women

In 2012, Tan spent 10 months in Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan, where he supervised the co-ordination of indirect fire support. He describes that time as a truly challenging stage in his life and says that he will always be proud of his military service. Tan is also still a member of the Army Reserves.

Industry Growth

With the Defence Industry growing, over the next decade and beyond, there will be an increase in demand for Australian workers with trade, technical and science and technology skills to build and maintain fleets of new ships, submarines, armoured vehicles, infrastructure and facilities, and contribute to intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, cyber and other electronic and information-based capabilities.

There are over 3,000 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) throughout Australia providing services such as software development, precision manufacturing, specialist engineering and support for the defence industry. Programmed is a member of this defence industry security program.
