Growth in PIMs Hunter Mining Region

Programmed Industrial Maintenance has always had a strong presence and great client relationships across the Hunter Valley mining sector in NSW.

The Wallarah Rd Workshop facilitates some of the business’ most complex and highly specialised works. At any one time, the workshop hosts a Production Manager, two Supervisors, two Leading Hands and 12 to 24 Boilermakers.

In the past year, the Hunter Mining business has experienced unforeseen growth across two key areas; offsite repairable works for surface mining equipment and power station maintenance.

The expansion in offsite repairable work has been especially notable in recent months. These works include maintaining excavator booms to keep them structurally sound and cutting out and rewelding broken welds to strengthen above-ground mining equipment.

These services can take anywhere between six to eight weeks in the Muswellbrook workshop and the team can be working on equipment that weighs anywhere between three to 100 tonnes.

Since being awarded a position in the Glencore panel of suppliers in late 2020, our Regional Manager, Dan Zammit, and his workshop team have completed works on six excavator booms and four buckets. In the first half of 2021, Dan and the team have secured works for an additional four booms and buckets and two excavator sticks, with more being tendered every week.

Dan shared with us what the critical success factors for this highly specialised scope were:

Safety: The works include complex lifting, confined spaces and lots of heat, so safety is the number one priority.

Welding quality: Supported by our strict Quality Management processes and plans and governed by the Australian standards for quality.

Skilled trade labour: The team draws on in-house resources for a complete self-delivery model.

This reinforces the Programmed values and the importance of safety and quality.

In what has otherwise been a tumultuous year for team members and customers, the Industrial Maintenance business is proud to see considerable growth in this area and are excited about what 2021 has in store.
